Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Why is hypnotherapy so effective in treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder (like a spasm) within the digestive system. It is not an illness or disease, but can be very uncomfortable and painful, similar to a migraine attack, which affects the brain instead of the intestinal system. The most common symptoms include 'crampy' abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea, bloating and excessive wind.

So what causes the digestive system to go into spasm? Could it be the food you eat or perhaps some kind of allergy? Changes in diet can sometimes help, however a change in environment and/or reduction in stress have been found to have a significant impact on the symptoms of IBS.

Whether or not stress is a factor in causing IBS, the symptoms do cause excess stress resulting from anxiety about the condition and concern about whether or not a more serious digestive disorder exists. It can cause stress through personal embarrassment, especially if one of the symptoms is excess wind, not to mention the constant planning ahead to make sure that whenever travelling or visiting someone, that there is a toilet nearby.

Using hypnosis as a tool for relaxation, combined with creating the powerful belief that you can heal yourself and the 'power of visualization' to self-heal, can help to control and reduce the symptoms of IBS. Research carried out by Whorwell, Prior and Faragher, published in medical journal The Lancet in December 1984 demonstrated that hypnotherapy is highly effective in the treatment of IBS.
